Ascending America's Highest Peaks to Raise Spirits Around the Globe

 Mount Davis, Pennsylvania

Mt. Davis,  PA

Elevation: 3,213 ft.

Summit Attained:  5 p.m., 01/04/08

Mt.
Davis was the first victim of an epic highpointing journey that I took a few days after New Years ’08 with my girlfriend Steph.  Our goal was to knock off Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia in less than eight hours.  Thanks to a Volvo XC90, its GPS, some Taco Bell and a lot of luck, we succeeded, reaching the top of Spruce Knob around 1 A.M.  But I’m getting ahead of myself…

Mt. Davis is located a few miles from Meyersdale, PA.  Anyone who has ever driven to Pittsburgh on the PA Turnpike has seen the windmills in Somerset County, and it turns out that these things are a good landmark for knowing you’re in Mt. Davis territory.  Astute AAP readers might remember that I tried to reach this highpoint in my President’s Day ’07 expedition with Jason.  Unfortunately, a vicious storm thwarted our efforts, so I certainly had a vendetta this time, coming all the way back out to western PA for a drive-up highpoint.

Mt. Davis can be reached by a little road that leads to a small parking area.  The whole Mt. Davis area was covered with snow when we went, but the hike from the parking lot to the summit observation tower is so short that we almost left our jackets and gloves in the car.  Good thing we didn’t, since it was really cold and blustery up on top.  We snapped a few pics and returned to the trusty vehicle, bound for Backbone Mountain, Maryland...
