Jerimoth Hill, RI
Elevation: 812 ft.
Summit Attained: Sunday, about 11 a.m. 12/02/06
Jason and I went to school at Brown, which happens to be about 20 minutes from the Rhode Island highpoint (The summit is actually the property of Brown University.) Jerimoth Hill used to be the most inaccessible of the U.S. highpoints due to the previous landowner's volatile temperament and fondness for shotguns and rocksalt. Luckily for us, however, Jerimoth’s new owners allow access 52 weekends a year.
After a short drive, we began an even shorter walk up a flat, narrow path that led into the woods. We strolled past a cage holding several large dogs, and hooked a right about 50 yards up the trail. Another 20 yards brought us around a bend into a clearing. Looking around, we saw a flat rock to our right, marked with a smaller stack of rocks. Guessing that this slab was the summit, we stepped up onto the stone for a few photo ops before signing the summit log that was tucked in a mailbox several feet away.
There wasn't much else in the clearing, besides a telescope stand and two battered old sheds. After another ten minutes, we left and drove back to Providence. Round trip was less than 2 hrs.
