Campbell Hill, OH
Elevation: 1,549 ft.
Summit attained: 04/15/08, approximately 4:30 p.m.
Campbell Hill is basically a grassy rise in the campus of the
Ohio
Hi-Point
Career Center, on the outskirts of the little town of Bellefontaine,
Ohio. Although topographically unremarkable, this was a significant highpoint for me, as it was the first stop in my cross-country journey to
Seattle. The campus is open late for night classes, but the parking lot was nearly empty when I arrived there late in the afternoon.
The highpoint itself is rather ambiguous. It might be located at the white sign that reads “highest point in
Ohio, elevation 1,549 ft.,” or it might be several feet away near a plaque that details the area’s history. My vote goes to the latter, as there is some sort of survey marker fixed into the concrete on the ground near the plaque. Another structure worth noting is the tall silo about 50 yards away that proudly proclaims “Top of Ohio” near its top.
Like many of the eastern highpoints, Campbell Hill is not exactly an awe-inspiring place, but it is the highest spot in
Ohio, and this fact alone makes it an interesting place to visit. Don't go out of your way to get there, but if you happen to be driving past Bellefontaine, be sure to stop and check it out.
